Addis Ababa says it delivered 496,971 homes in five years

Written on

The Addis Ababa City Administration says 496,971 homes were built and handed over to residents over the past five years, with a further 4,200 transferred in the first quarter of the current fiscal year.

The Addis Ababa City Administration says nearly half a million homes have been built and transferred to residents over the past five years as the city expands housing development and access to shelter.

The administration reported that 496,971 homes were constructed and handed over during the period, with delivery split across government-led construction and participation by real estate developers, private developers, cooperatives and volunteers.

More than 4,200 homes were also built and transferred to beneficiaries in the first quarter of the current fiscal year alone, including units in the Merkato Begonnet neighbourhood, the city said.

Beyond expanding supply, the administration said the developments are designed to create cleaner and more liveable neighbourhoods, with children's playgrounds, walking spaces and areas that encourage social interaction.

According to the Mayor's Office, the programmes target a broad range of beneficiaries, including people displaced by development projects, low-income households, older people, veterans and other residents seeking homes, in an effort to broaden access to housing across the city.
