The Nigerian Army says ongoing works at the 7 Division Cantonment in Maiduguri will provide accommodation for more than 4,000 families once completed, alongside a 50-bed hospital ward and a new divisional headquarters complex.

The Nigerian Army is expanding accommodation and supporting infrastructure at the 7 Division Cantonment in Maiduguri, with projects under way expected to house more than 4,000 families on completion.

Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Waidi Shuaibu disclosed the figure on Thursday while inaugurating newly completed 3-by-12 blocks of quarters for corporals and soldiers of lower ranks at the cantonment. He was represented by Maj. Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai.

According to the Army, the ongoing works include additional family accommodation blocks, officers' quarters, barracks flats, a 50-bed hospital ward and a new office complex for the headquarters of the 7 Division. The programme also covers the renovation of existing family accommodation blocks.

Shuaibu said the investment was intended to provide personnel with decent living conditions and modern office facilities, arguing that adequate housing is critical to welfare and operational effectiveness. He reaffirmed a commitment to developing barracks to modern standards with reliable electricity, clean water and adequate security.

He urged beneficiaries to maintain the new facilities, noting that they were built with public resources and must be protected against misuse and neglect, and thanked contractors and project supervisors for delivering the commissioned blocks.
