Ghana Hostels Demands Apology Over Rent Commissioner’s Pentagon Claims

A dispute has erupted between Ghana Hostels Limited and the Acting Rent Commissioner over alleged comments on Pentagon Hostel charges. The operator says the remarks were misleading and damage public trust in student accommodation pricing
Ghana Hostels Limited has strongly rejected comments made by the Acting Rent Commissioner regarding accommodation charges at the Pentagon Hostel on the University of Ghana campus, demanding an immediate and unqualified apology.
According to the company, the remarks made during a radio interview created a misleading impression that the hostel was exploiting students through its pricing structure. It stressed that while the facility is an SSNIT investment, day-to-day management and pricing decisions are independently handled by Ghana Hostels Limited.
The company further clarified that its standard four-in-one accommodation rates range from about GH¢7,392 to GH¢8,876 per academic year, with fees covering utilities and related charges. It also disputed claims of excessive pricing, arguing that its rates remain competitive compared to nearby private hostels.
Ghana Hostels insisted that no evidence supports allegations of unfair charges and maintained that premium room options represent only a small fraction of available accommodation.
The firm is now calling for a public apology, saying the comments risk undermining confidence in structured student housing provision.
